As the VW groups stock is rising, headlines are comparing the valuation with Tesla and it makes me laugh.

Tesla is not a car company; it’s a data company, and that is why Elon is getting so much heat from China at the moment. They are concerned about the amount of data it can capture.

I’m yet to read a headline where BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Porsche or VW have triggered such concerns in China. Why?

Allow me to explain.

Tesla’s have the capability to drive autonomously, without a driver at the wheel. Although the software needs development and more data on roads is required, the technology is already installed.

I know we’re unlikely to see driverless Tesla’s stopping at road crossings anytime soon however that is largely due to legislation and reliability.

Today you can engage the Auto-pilot feature, while being present in the drivers seat with your hands touching the wheel.

You realise that a Tesla knows it’s way around the roads pretty well and will stick bang in the middle of it’s lane as if it’s been doing it for years. That’s because it has.

Every time a Tesla goes down a road, it reads the surface, surroundings and sends all kinds of data back to HQ.

The sensors can see through heavy rain, fog, dust and even through the car ahead. This is backed up by eight cameras that have a 360-degree view around the car. The experience of Auto-Pilot is phenomenal.

Now jump into an Audi, Mercedes or, even worse, a BMW and engage the “lane assist” and radar-guided cruise control and watch it bounce between the lane markings as other drivers wonder if you’ve been drinking. Well, at least that was my experience.

Tesla has the upper hand on the performance against similarly priced rivals, and as we move towards autonomous vehicles, its competitors will be left behind and Tesla’s data will become increasingly valuable.

KFC is already testing driverless food trucks in China. It is the future.

The day will come when we will be worried of getting into a car with a human driver because autonomous vehicles will be so safe. It’ll be just like fear you feel when you leave home without your phone. We will wonder how we managed to put our lives in other peoples hands with so many human drivers around.

Anyone who has plugged a mobile phone into a car manufacturer’s native interface should understand the pain. I could not even get Spotify to work in 2019 and 2020 Audi and BMW without bugging until Apple Carplay came out and that is my point.

A car company should not be doing tech and leave it to the pro’s.

Apparently, Apple has been looking to partner with Hyundai or Kia to build a car, and although talks have apparently not concluded, I’m guessing that is exactly what Apple has planned.

Tech company does the tech, car company does the car.
